Our Story
The potter behind Starling Ceramics pursues bold and interesting shapes that reflect the process of each pot’s own creation. Since their journey began in 2018, they have gravitated toward straight lines with one or two design elements that make each piece unique, blending simple, modern forms with a timeless aesthetic. Starling’s goal is to bring connection and presence to the otherwise routine tasks their pieces are used for.
When the potter behind Starling Ceramics lived in the mountains, they would sit outside on summer and fall evenings, watching the surging crush of starlings, listening to the susurration of their flight. The way that thousands of complex living beings coalesced to make simple, striking, and majestic forms, winding into patterns with a breath all its own, was one of the most profoundly beautiful and moving sights. That is the inspiration behind Starling Ceramics.

Starling Ceramics is based out of the Kalamazoo ARTisans pottery co-op, located in the Park Trades Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Their work appears at Root Cafe in Fennville, Michigan and all wood-fired pieces were made with the support of Khnemu Studio on Fernwood Farm in Fennville, Michigan.
Starling Ceramics works with various clay bodies, supplied through West Michigan Clay Supply. Since 2024, they have been mixing their own glazes with supplies from Forest Hills Ceramics and West Michigan Clay Supply. Most pieces are stoneware. In 2025, Starling began to expand into wood fire porcelain as a limited series.
